A lesson I will keeeeeeep learning is 'just because you thought that was awesome when you were a kid doesn't mean it will work for your family today.' Not because I had to learn the hard way or anything, but we did a family vacation to The White Mountains and really had to scale back my expectations and remember it's their vacation too.
We go with the Comfort Zone Challenge thing I learned from summer camp a couple years ago: Chill like a penguin, nervous like a chicken, or terrified like a pterodactyl. We push when they're chicken, but not when they're terrified. And pushing too hard will never, ever make someone feel more chill.
So anyway, this was our trip:
So, we "did stuff", but I wanted to go to the aquarium or bring the kids out more - but honestly they appreciated the scenery, and taking it easy is a good thing. Both kids were kind of escalated anyway and had to go back to school last week, so I feel okay about not forcing us to Do More.
----
A couple more things:
I couldn't find my driver's license and I thought I might have made a copy and left it on the scanner at home, but I asked dan to 'check on top of the printer' instead of 'check the scanner' and so he didn't find it and it was missing all weekend but then it turned out to be on the scanner 'platen'
i left two bag of groceries, including eggo waffles and frozen fruit, in the car overnight :(
finally replaced the battery in my airtag and i feel invincible again jk
Dan was hinting he'd like to get a job up there or retire that-a-way or something! Maybe when we empty nest? Unless he DOES get a job with the ski companies that's worth uprooting for?!

So anyway, this was our trip:
- Arrival at 7 something Friday night
- - swimming at the hotel while dan hiked with friend
- - takeout lunch
- - naps & video games & spongebob
- - start puzzle
- - short hike w dan to the river
- - takeout dinner
- -switched who got the murphy bed and who got the sofabed
- grocery run & scenic drive
- Chair Lift up a Ski Mountain (whee) (I posted some of the pictures on meta. Ty was scared of the ascent because he remembered another lift; he calmed by the top, and enjoyed the way down.)
- Ice cream
- finished puzzle
- takeout dinner (M tried new things! and did not like them! Churros have a weird cream-cheese filling. Flan has a coffee-like flavor. Mexican nachos are not like movie theater nachos.)
- I brought the nachos & churros to our friends who had a cookout
- swimming outdoor pool in the dark (but the kids went in early - one was too cold, one had enough of Hot-Tub-Air, so dan and i stayed and visited our friends)
- Eating all the leftovers
- drive home :)
