first day of 12th and 7th
Aug. 27th, 2024 08:41 amwe made it this far, at any rate.
Meg is still struggling. Weekly therapy and medication are already happening, she's taking meds reliably. But she spent summer doing a lot of nuthin, which translates to lying around in bed most of the day. Credit where due: she did try to do Other Things daily, and did some exercising but since she wasn't used to it, got sore and didn't do it again; we did swim, she worked on whittling/carving wood while sitting in the treehouse; she did clean and organize her room several times, we set up a new Art Desk that she uses, she did work on the online shop; we did start doing more As A Family things this month like 'watching ninjago' and tying shoes and going to coffeeshop and playing Garticphone. She had a couple friends over, a couple times. We started having "play with the cats" time in the evening.
So. I remind her of these other things she did this summer, but she truthfully acknowledges that over the last 2 months, she still did a lot of nothin.
Things I don't know:
- how much of her having attacks of sad or anxious for no apparent reason pretty much daily is just cuz being almost 12 is awful
- what dan and I can do differently at home (how much do we Make Her do things she doesn't want to do, to get her out of her ruts, at what point should I try to snap her out of it)
-whether the forced activity of school will help, even though she'll hate it. (the STAIRS. the bus-stop HILL. the NOISE.)
I hope that the change to her routine will help. I think depression is a thing where, you don't WANT to do anything, but the more you indulge that, the worse it gets.
Ty admits that driving would be pretty cool. Maybe we'll pursue that this year. Also, the high school teachers lined up with encouraging signs and music this morning for the Welcome Back and somebody said 'woo ty senior year' and the teachers clapped and Ty bowed (his signature move). He has 2 classes and a remote asynch Javascript 2 class.
---UPDATE----
Both kids report 'pretty chill' first days! Meg got the teacher she wanted. Ty is realizing if he drove he wouldn't have to ride the noisy bus. Now, not entirely sure how that would work out if he follows through on it, with me working a mile down the street & everything (would he drop me off and someone else would bring me rest of the way? would he borrow dan's car?)
