one more thing for today so far
Aug. 16th, 2023 08:12 amA couple things about 'doing religion properly' have popped up recently. Like, I read a nice thing from the Daily Devotional about how humans consent to gender but a growing number of people do not consent to the gender they were assigned and that is okay.
Also, a friend of mine saw a flyer for the grief & loss bereavement group and she was interested in participating - I've talked with the facilitator and she's a chaplain, and she's just the sweetest. Like, not here to convert you, just here to help, and if you have a faith that helps you, great.
That made me kind of think about what I gravitate toward when I need spiritual care. I tend to notice the rocks and sunshine, trees and water and sky more. And then I remembered- when dan and I got married, 18 years ago, we were in a church and everything, and I kindof insisted on Psalm 148 (with Dan's agreement) -it's a praise-the-lord psalm, but this is the one that talks about sea creatures (or sea monsters), creeping things, and more. I was being a bit of an ass because I was like 'we can get someone to say sea monsters in church'. but also, honestly, the whole thing is about what a wonderful world we have.

One more thing on this: over the weekend I took my mom to an antique shop (which I have to talk more about later but here's a link, they have everything from fossilized shark teeth to old chandelier points and carriages, to indonesian gable decorations). Then we had a snack at a farmer's market & cafe place I love that has a garden center, fish pond, and prettiest views. Then on Saturday us grownups went to the Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium. Now, the Fairbanks museum is very weird and great - it started as a rich guy's private collection of curiosities, but if you like taxidermy dioramas from every biome, or artwork from each continent, it's very cool indeed. The planetarium show was about exoplanets, and we also checked out a butterfly house, and walked to a coffee shop. And the whole place was 90 minutes from home, but also probably next to us on any sort of map.
Do you see what i'm saying, here?
We got to think about how BIG the world is, and how SMALL it is at the same time. I had the right idea about that psalm anyhow.
